Tips for Saving Money at the Gas Pump

by michelleerfurt on April 25, 2011

When you’re a traveling therapy professional TRAVELING is a big part of your work day/life. As a business owner, you’re always looking into ways to reduce any extraneous expenses. But, have you checked out the price of gas lately? Ouch!

Here are some of my tips on how to save some money at the gas pump.

And, I don’t think you’re going to like what I’m about to say…

There is only ONE short term solution to not paying a lot for gas:

  1. Don’t use gas.

There are only preventative measures you can take to make sure that when gas prices rise again (and they will), you won’t feel the pinch as much. Just like we work to set our clients up for success, you need to set yourself for the success of paying less (very commercial sounding, but true)…

  • Live close to places that you normally drive to a lot. Like the grocery store, your main office, your children’s school or other third place.
  • Use public transportation when you can. Better yet…
  • Bike and walk when you can.
  • Support smart design in your local area that focuses on creating livable communities – citizens, walkability, aging in place and safety. Do not support efforts that promote suburban sprawl, multi-lane roadways, and place more value on the automobile (a machine) over the human being (an actual life).

It’s no secret that I’m a very staunch supporter of smart planning… part of that came from my husband who is an urban designer specializing in New Urbanism. This is not a job for him… it’s a true calling. I’m also big on smart planning because I am a survivor of poor design. (But more about that some other day.) :)
