So, the school year is ending and I’m seeing many of my music therapy tweeps sharing about their up-coming internships. If your family is anything like mine, you are being asked “What do you need?” and if you are anything like me, you would be thinking “I have no idea but I want to say something since they’re asking”.
Here are gift suggestions for the New Music Therapy Intern (from a former music therapy intern):
- A watch with a second hand. Something nice, but not too nice… something that is reliable and can hold up to hand washings, banging and grabbing.
- A pair of really comfortable workplace appropriate shoes. You will be on your feet, walking and carrying things more than you ever have in your life. Treat your feet.
- This book: Rules of the Red Rubber Ball
, by Kevin Carroll. The REAL, paper book… not a download. Carroll shares his real life story about how he found his #1 passion (a.k.a. his red rubber ball), built his life around it and lived happily ever after in this small, cartoon-laden book. I read this book about every 3 months for focus. It’s my favorite. And fun. And a little fuzzy-hearted.
- Gift cards of any kind. Coffee shops, restaurants, iTunes… anything! It’s great to be able to indulge yourself after a really positive / really crappy day. Either way… these cards fit the bill.
- A relaxation luxury item. How do you relieve stress? Ask for a bumped up accessory. Ex: Are you a tea drinker? Get a nice tea pot / tea cup set. Do you journal for stress relief? Pick up a deluxe blank journal. You prefer jogging? There are TONS of accessories for that one!
- But, seriously, the typical college day and the typical internship day are organized differently. During the college day, there are lots of mini-breaks built in… time between classes when you can cat nap in the lounge (that was my favorite!), physically get out of the music building, etc. That doesn’t happen during internship days… instead you are at work for about 8 hours straight… sure, you won’t have music therapy sessions the whole time but you can’t take naps or come and go either. So, after hours will be a time to decompress. This is when your relaxation luxury item will be needed.
I know there are definitely other fantastic gifts a new music therapy intern will need. Please share your suggestions by leaving a comment!
I’m also seeing other music therapy tweeps talk about graduating completely. Next week, I’ll be sharing gift suggestions for the New Music Therapy Professional. So, please stay tuned!
