Interview: Hospice Perspective from a Family Member

by michelleerfurt on May 23, 2011

I’m always curious about what people who receive hospice care think about getting hospice care. That would be the patient and the family. What did they expect would happen? Did they ever know about hospice care to begin with? Did it bring them comfort?

So I caught up with Rachel Rambach (you know, as in Listen & Learn Music, Rachel Rambach). She graciously allowed me to ask these probing questions because she has just experienced being a family member of a hospice care patient. AND she even agreed to share our conversation with you.

Thank you so much for this interview, Michelle and Rachel. Hospice is such a blessing to individuals at the end of their lives and their families/caregivers. I think it’s important for music therapists and other people in “helping” professions to process our own experiences being on the receiving end of services such as hospice, and your interview was so thoughtful.

My grandmother was receiving hospice care at a hospice house here in Florida a few months ago, and my experience was very similar to Rachel’s – the staff was caring, compassionate, and willing to go above and beyond to make sure the entire family was supported in whatever way we needed to be. We were also lucky enough to have a wonderful board-certified music therapist providing services to my grandmother and family twice a week. :)
