Last week I shared my personal music therapy employment story (I had to do it in two parts: Part 1 & Part 2). I wish I could write a list of tips saying how to get a music therapy job. But… I’m EXTREMELY uncomfortable doing that. However, I am comfortable listing what worked for me and a few things I learned along the way. So…
Some ways to find Music Therapy employment
- Use your resources: AMTA, CBMT, and every LinkedIn, Facebook, Yahoo, you-name-it group.
- Network: Talk to people.
- Narrow your search: Make it population specific, location specific or whatever else is important to you.
- Don’t give up: Don’t give up!
- Get involved: Don’t just look for an open position by a Google search, take the next step deeper in your search to find work.
- Network: Seek people out to talk to.
- Keep looking even if you get a ‘job in the meantime’: Sometimes you have to accept a not-so-dream job but that doesn’t mean you should stop looking for a better option.
- Be creative: There is definitely more than one way to get a job. Think of out-of-the-box ways to approach your job searching task. How else can you get connected with what you want?
- Keep learning: In my case, I did some self study courses. I don’t think the topic really matters, what matters is that you keep working on something that you are interested in and you keep moving forward.
- NETWORK: Ok, so it’s really obvious that the secret to my employment success has been all about connecting with other Music Therapists. Truthfully, I really enjoy talking with other MTs and, well, I think I have a knack with networking.
But, maybe the secret of my employment success isn’t networking after all… Maybe it’s to…
11. Look in a way that suites you: In other words, let your strengths guide your search.
Those are just some ways to find a music therapy job. What are your tips? Please share them in the comments!

What a great list Michelle. I like the repeated use of Networking, but so appreciate number 11 the most. TY for sharing your personal story. This is a MUST-READ blog series for students/interns/new MT’s and the like. =)
Great suggestions Michelle! I would also suggest broadening your search criteria – music therapists can be hired under many different titles (i.e. Activities Coordinator/Director, Recreation Therapist, etc.). That may help as well!
