Conference Quick Tip #7

by michelleerfurt on October 2, 2012

The countdown continues so lets get packing!!!

My husband is a former business traveler and adamant about not checking bags. I’m so cheap that I’m ok with it. It was tough at first but I have to admit, it is nice to be able to jump off the airplane and not have to stand at the luggage carousel for that great big, heavy bag.

Packing Tips

  • Don’t bring things that the hotel already has for you - Like a hairdryer, shampoo, toothpaste, etc. (Ok, I always forget the toothpaste anyway!)
  • Don’t pack your liquids in the 3oz travel bottles - Seriously! I figured out that for me, I don’t need 3oz. of face wash for 3 days. Instead I pack my liquids in plastic paint pots like these (ok, except they’re empty, I couldn’t find them online, but I swear they’re in the store with the paint supplies). You can pick them up at Hobby Lobby or Michael’s for <$2.
  • Get a travel shirt pack-it folder - I don’t really know what these things are called but I’m talking about something like this. It helps you fold and squish your clothes to at least half of their normal size. They also don’t get wrinkled. It’s like magic in your suitcase!
  • Don’t bring so many shoes - Many of us love our shoes. But, shoes are such a weird shape that they are just not built for travel. Try to be fashionable AND practical at the same time.

I consider myself a pretty efficient packer. We have traveled with our daughter several times with cloth diapers, a weeks worth of clothing (for each of three people + extras for the accidents), no stroller and several airplane fun things for her and only two suitcases (put in overhead) and 3 carry ons (under the seat).
That being said, my saving grace for traveling when I fly are the vacuum seal bags. They are AMAZING and worth every penny (which isn’t very much considering). Check these out: http://www.amazon.com/Eagle-Creek-Pack-It-Compressors-pc/dp/B000LEE8AI/ref=sr_ap_fbt_0

Happy traveling!
